Before we get started, it’s worth noting that when you chose to forward your domain to withjoy.com, it will impact the mobile web experience for you and your guests. Our current system does not translate custom URLs to mobile. This is going to get technical, but here is the deal: This is due to domain provider constraints interfering with our ability to determine if the browser is mobile or web. Because of that, it does not send the minimized data to the mobile site. While this is definitely on our list to tackle in early 2017 with our own domains, right now it will impair the mobile web experience. If you’re still interested, go ahead and read on!
When you first created your Joy wedding, you were given a website URL in the following format: http://withjoy.com/<yourweddingname>. We understand if you want something a bit more customized or easy to remember, and doing so is easy! If you want to set up a personalized domain name for your Joy website, see the steps below:
Step 1: Purchase your domain from GoDaddy.com. We recommend not just looking at .com domain names, but also at options like .wedding, .us, .love, etc.
Step 2: Once you have purchased the domain, select the domain you want to connect with your Joy wedding website.
If you do not see the domain easily, find the arrow in the top right corner of your homepage on the GoDaddy site. Clicking on this will give you an option to “manage your domains.” The domain that you purchased should be drop-down list; click to open it.
Step 3: Once you navigate to your domain profile setup, look under settings and find the “Forwarding” option. Our goal is to have your domain name from GoDaddy forward to your Joy website URL.
The screen shot below is using the URL is productise.me (forgive us for not using a wedding-themed example).
Step 4: Once you click on “Forwarding,” a screen should appear as shown below . Click the “Add Forwarding” button.
Step 5: Now, configure your “forwarding” function as shown below:
- Choose Forward to as “https” instead of “http”
- Type your url, it should be “withjoy.com/<yourweddingname>”
- Choose 301 Permanent Redirect and then Save
Step 6: Press Save, and you’re all set. You can now have people use the URL you’ve purchased, which will take them directly to your Joy website.
Additionally, we only support domain forwarding as a method for using Custom Domains on your Joy website. We are working hard on building the ability for you to map your domain name to Joy so that it hides your withjoy.com/<yourweddingname> url. We expect this to be updated early next year as well.
